Triumph TR 2
1955
1991cc
The first TR2 came on the market in 1953. It was known for reliability,
good miles per gallon, and commendable performance reaching over 90 mph.
The TR2 had several race victories including the 1954 RAC Rally.
The TR2 was also entered in the 1954 Mille Miglia, and the 1955 Le Mans 24-hour race.
It continued in manufacture until 1955, when the TR3 was introduced.
The total production run was over 8,500 TR2s, most of which
were exported to the United States.
It was built by the Standard Motor Company at their Banner Lane factory in Coventry.
The first TR2 left the assembly line on Thursday March 4th 1954.
The design was created for Sir John Black, the owner and Managing Director
of the Standard Motor Company.
It was originally introduced at the London Motor Show in 1951 as the TR1, but none
were produced with that name, and for production the name was changed to TR2.
The original engine started life as a Standard Vanguard tractor engine used on
Ferguson tractors and fitted with twin SU Carburettors to increase power to 90bhp.
